NO - Leatherman TTI multi-tool
NO - Kobalt tri-blade utility knife, 3 inch straight blade, and 3 inch serrated blade

If this is just like a metal clip or a chain link of some sort, then that would be fine. DO NOT try to bring the chains if you mean real chain such as you would use for hauling something.

OK - zippo lighter
People will tell you that you cannot take this, but the TSA web site (the people who make the rules) say specifically that you CAN take one standard zippo type or butane lighter with you into the cabin. Some people will say to put it into your checked luggage - that is WRONG. You can only put lighters into your checked luggage if you either empty them of fuel, or if you put them into special DOT approved containers. It says so specifically on the TSA web site. Really!
Read more about what you can and cannot bring here:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm
That page had a general list, and has links to many lists that cover specific kinds of different items.
EDIT: Anything like a knife or other bladed or sharp pointed items must be in a sheath or have the sharp edge/point protected so it cannot hurt anyone - like a TSA inspector - who may go through the contents. There are no restrictions on carrying sharp objects, knives, swords, tools and so in in checked luggage, so you do not need to do anything special except to be certain that they are packed in such a way that they cannot cut or harm anyone.
The TSA website has some tips on packing that may be useful.
When you have luggage to check, you need to go to the ticket counter of the airline on which you are flying and wait to get to the head of the line then talk with one of the agents. You just need to tell them your name, really, and produce some ID (driver's license is the usual thing). They will look up your reservation. Tell them you have 1 (or 2 or whatever the number is) of bags to check to whatever your final destination city is.
These days there is a baggage fee for just about everyone (not traveling first class), so be prepared to pay the fee. You can look at the airline's web site to find out the cost for each bag, and you can sometimes get a discount by paying the fee on line before you actually go to the airport.
While you are at the ticket counter, the agent can also print out the boarding pass or passes that you need for your flights.
After you get the boarding passes, and the agent takes your bag, then you can go to wait in the security line.
Leave for the airport earlier than you might otherwise, so you have additional time to get through the line at the ticket counter. It is hard to predict how long it is and how long the wait will be.
