do you teach your children the proper way to approach a strange dog?
As a dog owner, I really appreciate it when little kids ask me first if they can pet my dog.
The other day a little kid ran up to my dog waving his arms and screaming. To a dog this is very scary and threatening. To you it would feel like a strange man charging at you waving a knife.
I wish all parents would explain this to their children.
I try very hard to teach them this but they are 2, 3, and 4 years old. I still have to catch them as they start running toward the dog yelling "OOOOH, PUPPY HOW CUTE, LET ME TOUCH YOU!!!"
If I can catch them before they start running I will tell them something like, "Wait, do you see that man/woman at the other end of the leash? You need to ask that person BEFORE you try to pet the dog."
When we go on our walks I often remind them not to touch any dogs they see because they do not know the dog and we do not touch animals or people we do not know. I have to tell them people too because they'll see smaller kids or elderly people and want to hug and drag the elderly and steal the small kids. Its awful, but I'm slowly breaking them of doing this.
But, I agree, all parents need to teach this to their children, not just for safety but respect as well.
