Where can I get combat/defensive knife training?

I live in virginia, and would like to get training in the field of knives. I'm going In as an officer in the Marine Corps, however, I would like to see if there is any place I can go for civilian training. I'm 18 years old, so age should not be an issue (unless its a 21 factor. Found that out with a concealed weapons permit). If you can give me information on in the area (henrico county), state, USA training, or anything in general, that would be great. Thanks, I'll be waiting for your feed back.

I want to be trained now so I can feel safe with the knives I do carry and to be able to defend myself and others from harm if it ever came up. Nothing unlawful.

also, this can be combat training or martial arts training. I just want to get my facts straight.

They'll train you on proper knife use in the Marine Corps -- but, if you insist on getting the go ahead before you commence actual military training, my advice is to sign up for a nearby martial arts studio. Look for one with an instructor who cares less for tradition and appearances, and more about what might actually work in a street fight or when shit truly hits the fan. Obviously, it's better (for what you're seeking) to train for real scenarios, rather than to practice a bunch of flashy but useless little chops and high flying kicks and all that jazz. At the martial arts studio I attend, we regularly practice knife offense/defense using faux, wooden knives. Go in and ask around at various studios to see if they do this. If you can find a Krav Maga studio, also, that's your best bet for practical defense.

And as an aside, check your local knife laws to confirm the legality of the knife you carry. Some states have silly laws, but I don't know the deal for Virginia. Here in Georgia, I had to search high and low to purchase a knife that conforms to the law without sacrificing utility. Also, I wouldn't recommend using said knife in a fight, ever, unless it's life or death and you're boxed in. Running is always option #1. I know a few people who've disarmed knife wielding assailants, used their own knife to kill them in self defense, and yet, themselves, were sent to prison for murder. It's a silly world we live in.
