is it Legal to carry/own a spring assisted knife in Michigan?
I am really wanting to buy and use this knife for casual and camping purposes. http://www.assistedknife.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/24996/subcatid/59448/id/338066
this website says they are legal everywhere, but that is the only place i have found that has said that for sure.
Is it legal??
It is NOT a switchblade
Furthermore I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan
also I would get the 2.9" blade version
also I am 17 (18 in october)
"Legal everywhere" is a lofty claim. Frankly there's not such thing.
Now for the law, Michigan allows folding knives under 3 inches. But it does not allow "Pocket knife opened by mechanical device." which is:
"knife having the appearance of a pocket knife, the blade or blades of which can be opened by a flick of a button, pressure on a handle or other mechanical contrivance"
This doesn't count if you are disabled and only have the use of one arm.
Under that law, the way it is worded could make this knife illegal in the eyes of a policeman or judge.
On a personal note, I actually own that exact knife! I live where they are legal, but you know what? It's not a very good knife. The spring weakens after about 20-30 openings, and then the blade doesn't quite make it all the way out. The blade doesn't hold an edge well either.
