What Did a Russian Infantry Soldier Carry During WWII?
What Equipment did the average Russian Rifleman carry into battle during WWII (1942-Stalingrad) How much ammunition, what sidearm, any fighting knives, food, coat, living supplies, water etc...
Firearms:
Generally, it depended on who the firearms were given to. Most senior military members (as in, those not drafted) were given some higher-quality weapons. This includes:
Pistols:
Pistols were generally only given to officers or commissars: Samozarjadnyj Pistolet Tokareva, or TT/Tokarev pistol, or a Nagant revolvers were the most common, though some soviet soldiers picked up pistols from German officers. Pistols were not commonplace around ground troops and sidearms weren't often issued.
Main arms:
The two most prevalent arms in WWII on the soviet side were the PPS/PPSH submachine guns, or Пистолет-пулемёт Шпагина, and the Mosin Nagant bolt action rifle. The Mosin Nagant was sometimes fitted with a telescopic sight, which provided 3.5-4x magnification.
How much ammunition was again Dependant on if you were a soldier before or during the war. Officers would receive a pistol with additional magazines or clips (if it was a Nagant revolver), possible 3-4 of them. Standard soldiers would be armed with PPSH variants, and would keep 3-4 additional magazines inside a messenger bag. It is the same story with riflemen, as they carried the Mosin Nagant (with sling) and spare stripper clips. Some soldiers were given SVT-40's, though this was uncommon in the early years of the war.
Drafted Soldiers were usually simply given any weapon their comrades could find, if any. Some soldiers weren't given any weapons at all. Most of the time, a drafted soldier would head into battle without any weapons and would either have to find his own, or be given one in a camp/base.
Members of the military were armed with NR-40 knives. They had a bowie point with an S-shaped guard and wooden handle
Food was given in ration tins, the size usually dependant on the situation, but the average size of one ration was about the size of one can of tuna, and could contain anything from roasted meat to stale bread in water. Rations were generally dirty and not safe to eat.
Water was stored in a small metal canteen which was kept in their messenger bags.
Soldiers generally took their own clothing, but the standard issue clothing were olive green pants and an olive-green button up shirt. Over this would be another thick woolen olive drab trench coat with fur on the collar, wrist and knee area (where the coat ended). Many coats were over sized or undersized depending on the soldier, because most of them had come from dead comrades.
