Which Wustoff Steaks knives should I buy for a present?
I would get the 3 piece set they have to make it easy as it comes in a box. However, if you really want to get the essentials, I would get the large chef's knife or santuko, a boning knife and a paring knife. If you have more money, I would add the sharpening steel next, followed by the small chef's knife.
My parents have had Wustoff for well over 35 years (we lived
in Bavaria when I was younger). Their paring knife suffered a broken tip due to abuse. My parents bought me an extensive set of the other brand mentioned. I abused the paring knife as well, and I have noticed a stress crack that is about 1.5 centimeters long. Moral of the story is that you use good knives as intended and they will last for years. I consider both brands to be quite good as long as you purchase the upper ends of their lines. I prefer the classic riveted models. I have molded handled ones myself and they are fine but I like the weight of the riveted handles best and they have been time tested. The newer ones with molded metal handles I think are nice to look at but I would assume are not as comfortable due to metal being cooler to the touch.
