Divorcing an abusive husband?
I have a friend who lives with her mother and step-father; the two have been together for about a year. He is always very abusive towards them; verbal abuse seems constant, a knife has been pulled, and he has even physically harmed dogs and puppies living in their home.
They share a condo, which I believe the step-father is paying for. What can they do? I suggested that they call the cops as a start (he threw a DVD player the other day and it landed on a newborn puppy), to get his abusive acts on record with the cops, which I'm sure would be a good start at getting him out of their hair, but then what could they do? I'm assuming that they'd need to find a new place to go, or would there be a way for them to stay there?
Any advice that could be offered is greatly appreciated; I hardly know where to start.
Please remember there is little you can do until the mother is ready to make a change. People are quick to say call the police, etc, but that is pointless until the MOM is ready. It can also be quite dangerous. If CPS shows up and removes your friend from the home, who do you think will take the beating after they leave? It will be your friend's mom.
Ask the police what resources are available for battered women in your area. There is usually a brochure. Get one and give it to your friend. If the mom is willing to call the cops, she could seek a restraining order, which would keep the step-dad out of the condo. She will need a plan, though.
800.799.SAFE is a good resource to help develop a safe plan to leave, or get free counseling.
