Where can I get a knife professionally sharpened?
I recently purchased a chef's knife at a garage sale. The person I bought it from obviously did not use the steel very much and the blade is a bit dull. I'm not too serious of a chef, so I don't want to buy a nice stone to sharpen it myself. Where can I get this knife professionally sharpened?
I'd avoid big supermarkets, sharpening jobs there as usual are worse than sub-par.
Local butcher is probably hit and miss, I've seen really bad and pretty decent sharpening works in different places around here.
The best bet strangely enough is barbershop, They don't sharpen themselves, but good barbers own really expensive equipment, scissors 300-500$ are nothing unusual and good straight razors run well over a hundred too. So, those guys have to watch who they trust their expensive pieces.
Ask them who is their sharpener. Most likely it'll cost slightly more, but work will be mucho better.
As for the rest, it's not that hard to create a decent edge on your knife, and you really don't have to invest in expensive sharpening equipment either, inthe beginning and later as well something as simple as sandpaper and mousepad will do. I've sharpened everything with those, including ceramic knives.
