Which paring knife should i get?

My friend loves to cook and for christmas i wanted to get her a paring knife. i wanted to spend up to about $50. i dont have much time so i would rather not risk it with shipping times so i was looking at williams sonoma because they're close to me and they have nice things.

i dont know anything about knives, but i did find out that shun is very good, and wusthof has nice reviews as well. i was looking at these knives-

3 1/2 or 4 1/2? Which would be better?

Curved? whats this used for? is it better?

So between the two, which would you go with? or what do each do better? Also, do you need a sharpener? Ive seen her sharpen bigger knives but do these need a special sharpener?

Thanks!

Wustof is a good brand for everyday cooking knives. If you're looking to get her just a good, all around paring knife, I'd opt for the 4 1/2" Grand Prix II Paring knife. The birds beak knife is more speciallized for garnishing and peeling fruits. This can all be done with a standard paring knife though. As far as the size of the knife, i find that the 4 1/2 can tackle more foods. It is still small enough for tedious work but will handle larger foods better. I wouldn't bother purchasing a sharpener. I never sharpen my own knives. I use a honing steel each time that I use a knife which you can use on a paring knife. about every 9 months or so, i send out my knives to a local knife smith who sharpens them for me. there are several companies that you can find online to sharpen knives. but as long as she takes care of the knife (NEVER puts it in the dishwasher, doest let it get all banged up in a kitchen drawer) the knife should be fine. hope this helps.

if you have a linens and things or a bed bath and beyond near you, id look there too. they carry shun and wustof and sometimes have better prices than williams and sonoma.
