Does a sharpening steel ever need to be replaced? If so, how often .?

I was just wondering if a sharpening steel ever needs to be replaced? I have a HENCKELS GOURMET SET that came with a steel in the block. I was curious to know if the steel ever needs replacing or will it pretty much last indefinitely? I have a mechanical sharpener that I use to sharpen my knives. I use the steel afterward to hone the edge and also to maintain the edge between sharpenings. Just wondering about this.Obviously, if I find that my knives get dull sooner ,that would be an indication, but aside from this ,what else would indicate when it's time to replace?

I have used Henckels for many years and the steel won't have to be replaced. However, I surely do not recommend using a mechanical sharpener for your knives as they can cut into the steel. Much better to pick up a whet stone at your local hardware.
