knife lanyard
Lanyard/knot help?

I was wondering what would be the best way to attach a knife/whistle/compass etc. to a bag with some cord so it can be easily removed and attached?

I think you need a version of the reef or square knot.

If the lanyard has a loop of string you use that, or you can make a loop of string on the knife or whatever.

Put the loop through the ring, put the knife though the loop, pull the knife away from the lanyard till the loop has become a knot.
To release you work the knot loose, bring the knife through the loop and there you go.

This site shows it with a key:

http://www.layhands.com/knots/Knots_Decorative.htm

It is about 3/4 down the page in number 8.

When you do this with two pieces of string you get the reef (or square) knot or the collapsed version of it, the cow hitch.
