knife japan
Where can I have my knife sharpened in Tokyo, Japan?

Preferably near Kichijoji. :)
Preferably near Kichijoji. This is for a typical cooking knife.

How good is the blade? Unless it is extremely high quality and expensive or some kind of antique why not sharpen it yourself? You're definitely in the right country to find quality sharpening materials. Have a look in hardware shops for sharpening stones (almost always Japanese water-stones which are the best anyway), or in cookware shops and specialist knife shops for higher quality ones. Be careful though, the Japanese take the sharpening of knives *seriously* so some stones are extremely high quality and expensive! You would only need stones like this if you have a very nice knife. I've even seen cheap stones for cheap knives in the 100 yen shops!

Have a look for combination stones (one side low-grit, one side high-grit) for a good all round stone. Look on the internet and you'll find plenty of instructions about how to use water-stones. It's not hard when you get the hang of it, and you'll be able to sharpen your knives whenever you want.

If you want somebody else to do it for you or you have a nice knife you don't want to practice on, try asking at a specialist knife shop. I've seen plenty of them in all parts of Japan, they usually sell just kitchen knives and stones. I would think they will sharpen it for you for a small cost if you ask. They may even give you a few pointers if you ask nicely.
