Forensic Evidence Collection?
How do forensic scientists collect the following:
- a large bag of white powder
- small pieces of cling flim
- roll of cling film
- small electronic balance
- a shirt with blood stains
- a knife
- 20 mobiles
- 4 cameras
- inkjet printer with paper
- 3 pairs of shoes
- 4 big boxes full of Vodka.
Also, how do they examine each in a lab?
The white powder is collected a put into a larger bag, then sent off to FS labs. Needs to be labelled with investigator name, time, date, location found etc.
Small pieces of cling film - Picked up using tweezers, place into a small envelope, then placed into a larger envelope. Relevant info on front of enevelope, then sent to lab.
Roll of cling film, placed into large enevelope, or strong cardboard box.
Small electronice balance put into strong cardboard box, sent to lab.
Shirt with blood stains - Sent to lab no later than 48 hours after it's found. 48 hours after blood has left body, the blood is USELESS as evidence. This shirt is wrapped in paper, and put into an envelope then sent to lab.
A knife is placed into a specified plastic tube, then an evelope or cardboard box, sent to lab. Knife shouldn't be tampered with at all, or touched with bare hands.
Mobiles are placed in envelopes.
Cameras in envelopes.
Printer and paper in cardboard box.
shoes in large envelope or box.
And boxes or vodka would be placed into a large box.
All sent to lab displayed with correct information. incl. time and date. location of scene. location evidence was found. photographic evidence also need to be recorded. also name of investigator who sent and found evidence.
The vodka would be examined to see if it was actually vodka or a different substance. i think chromatography can be used for that.
Shoes will be viewed under microscope for any small fibers/hairs etc.
Blood will be examined first. to see if its still useful as evidence. they can also do DNA profiling, to try and find a match in the blood against any suspect/victim.
cameras / mobile phones will be viewed and maybe taken apart to see if there is any evidence inside or on the phone.
The knife will be looked at to see if it has any blood on or any fibers, using microscope.
The powder will be analysed to find out what it was and if it was linked to cause of death, or whatever went on.
