Why don't surfers take big knives with them incase of shark attacks?

I'm watching a programme about shark attacks, and i'm wondering why the surfers dont have like machetes with them, they could strap them to their ankles or wrists or something.

I noticed a couple things while reading the other answers. One, most of these nitwits have never surfed (I know Jason M has - and his answer is sensible). And most seem to know absolutely nothing about sharks or shark attacks.

I have been surfing for over 42 years. For many years, I was an avid shark fisherman. I gave it up. (professional courtesy - I don't eat sharks, so sharks won't eat me).

Most surfers have a higher chance of getting run over by a beer truck while walking to the beach than they do getting attacked by a shark.

Also, aside from the trash you see in hokie, low budget movies, you have a hell of a time trying to stab a shark in the water. It's tough enough when you have one in your boat or on the beach. They have tough, sand-papery skin. And, they don't just sit there and let you stab 'em.

I used to scuba dive until a physical problem forced me to stop. I always carried a knife diving. But that was for a thousand other purposes, other than dueling with sharks.
