What is a switch blade?

Is that like an automatic knife or is it just a plain jane manual foldable?

A switchblade knife has a spring loaded blade that is button activated. You push the button and the blade pops out. They are illegal in most states. In Virginia the law is fairly harsh about switchblades, your concealed carry permit will not protect you from a Class I misdemeanor (one step below a felony).

The Gerber is not a switchblade. Note the stud on the rear portion of the blade. You place your thumb on that and push the blade open. My Kershaw is similar except mine is spring assisted, which opens the blade quickly, but still requires me to push the blade open.
