I have a Forschner chef's knife and paring knife that my mom bought me. This brand is great and not too expensive.
You have to be careful with cheap knives.....you get what you pay for. Make sure that any knife you buy has a full tang (the metal part goes the length of the handle) and don't get knives that "never" need sharpening, as they are a HUGE pain.
Many restaurant supply stores have good inexpensive knives. It's much more affordable to buy them there than a department store. Knives are an investment, so only buy the ones you really need.
