SAFETY - DISCARDING OLD BOX KNIFE CUTTER BLADES?

I would like to know in your own words, where is the safest place to discard old box knife cutter blades? Where would you dispose of them and if you have ever had a mishap in which you cut yourself with a blade? I need as many people on this question if you guys can help me out please.

After dad died, I found a bunch of those he saved. He kept them in a Band-aid empty can and hid them in the garage with the rest of his screws & nails.

Before they recycled metal, he saved everything that's got metal, and were in one cigar box. Even rusted paper clips.
