Set Deer Cleaning
I'm 53, he's 49. Sweet guy, but...?

I have been dating this guy I really like for about 2 months. I use the term dating loosely because about all we do is practice bow shooting, clean deer, and have sex. We've only actually gone out a few times. He has 2 younger kids he has sole custody of. I don't really mind that we don't go anywhere, but since he is very busy, I have to wait around every night to see if he is hunting, hauling the kids, or whatever. It has been 25 years since I dated, but this just seems a little strange to me. It's almost impossible to make any plans in advance. He has been divorced 10 years so he is set in his ways. I really feel like I am falling in love. Does this seem like a bad set-up?

You're both ahead of me in age, but not by very much. This is our reality now; romance has to take a "get in where you fit in" approach as we continue to satisfy our day-to-day responsibilities. And by him being a single parent with sole custody, his responsibilities are legion. He wants to ensure that his children have as rich and full a life as he can provide for them, knowing full well that an essential element (their mother) is missing from the equation. So, yeah, he's definitely busy. (Also, the fact that he has sole custody when mothers customarily receive custody in most cases can lead you to infer that there were some real problems there and he is stepping up to the plate on his children's behalf.) All of this speaks highly of him and his character. Within this framework you two are dating, and no, it's not the starry-eyed ideal of dating we imagined when we were in our teens, but there is much that could be fulfilling here, just the same. Even the best of people will have ways that are annoying to others. The question here is: Do the negatives of an association with him outweigh the positives? If you feel you may be falling in love, I have to believe you find more compelling reasons to be with him than not.(And based on your description, this makes perfect sense to me.) That said, it doesn't mean you should necessarily grin and bear scheduling ambiguities...just that you should choose your battles carefully. Understand the enormity of what he's dealing with, but every so often, gently remind him of his obligations to your relationship. With effective communication it's likely you two can establish a balance you can both live with and thrive within. Good luck to you all in this regard.
