What's the best fixed blade outdoor knife?
I'm getting a knife and I'm going to use it for camping and hiking and hunting. Not skinning and gutting though. I'm only going to spend 50-75$ on it though. Thanks
sounds like you're looking for what some might call a "utility" knife
the famous "KaBar" is designated as a "combat utility" knife so it might suit you (also made by Ontario) - it comes standard with 7" blade but they also make a shorty with 5-1/4" blade
I've carried one made by Camillus for years and used it for cutting trees down, digging latrines, and several other duties and it has served me well - I would prefer about a 6" blade with a little more weight
the Buck Special and Woodsman are also pretty good
I used to really like the Cold Steel Recon Scout but it is only available now in San Mai at $300+ - you might look at their SRK or their Canadian belt knife (a copy of a famous design)
the SOG knives have good reputation but I have no experience with them
Benchmade are very good
you really need to determine what and how you are going to use the knife to determine size and shape you want
If you plan on using it for chopping, you will want a larger and heavier knife than if you will be just cutting
