Where can I purchase a good straight edge razor kit?

My boyfriend mentioned last night he'd like an old style razor. I'm assuming he's talking about a straight edge razor. I'd like to find him a nice kit. Any suggestions on where to look and what to look for? And about how much I need to expect to spend? Thanks!

What does your boyfriend already have? To use a straight razor, you need a minimum of the razor and a strop to begin with, and eventually a honing stone to keep it sharp. You can get a good deal on a razor & strop (starting from $120) from www.straightrazordesigns.com under the "straight razor & strop sets" tab.

If he wants the whole "old style" shaving experience (which I highly recommend), he'll also need a good shaving brush and shaving soap or cream. Those aren't too pricey; anywhere from $10 for a boar's hair brush to hundreds of dollars for premium super badger brush (and lots in between), plus another $5-$50 for soap or cream.

To answer your question about where to look, the Straight Razor Designs website above has a tab called "Straight Razor Wet Shaving Sets". Starting from $210, you can get him a razor, strop, brush, shaving mug, and a soap. I would recommend you get him the World of Straight Shaving DVD option, too, because he's going to have tons of questions if he's never used a straight before.

By the way, I get no compensation for recommending Straight Razor Designs. I almost forgot. Even though new straights are sharp, they are not necessarily "shave-ready". Straight Razors Designs will make sure your razor is "shave-ready" and will give you a certificate for one free re-sharpening.
