Cold Steel Srk vs. Kabar USMC?
Looking to pick up a knife for minor survival tasks/camping/backpacking. I have narrowed it down to the SRK and USMC...I guess they are both great knives and it comes down to preference. Any suggestions?
I have 2 "Kabars" - one by Camillus and one by Ontario. The Ontario is not mil-spec in that it has some teeth on the spine. I've used the Camillus for years and tried to put it away since it is mil-spec. Didn't work. The Ontario knife's grip is just a little fatter than the other and it just doesn't feel right. Have tried several different genuine Ka Bars and the grip doesn't feel the same on all of them. But all of them are within specs per military. All that is to say you need to pick the one that feels right to you.
SRK has Kraton grip. Some people like but others don't. Durability has been questioned but I've never seen one damaged by normal use.
Ka Bar has stacked leather - don't know if the natural leather has been treated. The black leather on military models has a penetrating coating to prevent rot and mildew. Leather sheath will not last.
SRK uses AUS-8A stainless which I prefer over the 1095 for the Ka Bar but the stainless is harder to sharpen (for me anyway)
SRK blade is 3/16" thick vs 1/8" for Ka Bar so it is probably a little tougher if you mistreat it.
Balance will be different.
Pick them up and see which feels right in your hand - buy it.
Both are very good knives.
