how do i get adjusted to military life?
i wanted to be a soldier, and i viewed the dark side of the army - getting up at 5am, doing survival exercises in the cold (i like those by the way), etc.
but i have a feeling that i'll miss my home and family. when i started going to a new school, i had a hard time adjusting to the changes. so is there anything that can help me?
First off I applaud you for considering the military as a way to improve yourself, it is a prudent choice!
Normally soldiers usually get accustomed to military life quite easily. BCT (Basic Combat Training) will give you very little free time so the days will go rather quickly. This is designed to indoctrinate you into the battle rhythm (everyday routine) of the military. The first thing to know is DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED about anything in the military. You can accomplish anything that is put in front of you! Your instructors and Drill Sergeants are there to help you, even if you feel they aren't sometimes. Remember that you are a member of a team and always act in the interest of the TEAM, because if you help them, you are helping yourself.
Homesickness is a natural feeling when you are away from your usual familiar surrondings, don't try to fight it. Memories of home and family/friends have sustained me on those hard days in Iraq and Afghanistan. Use your memories as a benefit rather than a distraction. Everytime you feel homesick, find someone else in your platoon to talk to. You are there to help one another as well as complete the mission.
Also, something else that helped me was keeping a pen and paper with me at all times and everytime I remembered something that made me feel happy, I wrote it down and that way after we got in trouble and everyone else was feeling down, I was laughing and enjoying my good times from the past.
