During my chef class, my knife was taken out of my knife kit? Is it common for people to steal knives ?
at college? How much would a good butcher knife cost? The kit cost $119, and they took the biggest knife. Someone else said their knife was stolen also. It was the first day in the kitchen, and it was taken really early in class. Very strange and frustrating.
When I was learning my trade, the very first day I was at the college, people complained about theft. I remember being in my first class and a woman from another class walked into the room furious - so very angry she didn't realise we were all new and wouldn't have had an opportunity to steal anything from anyone - and she started rummaging through everyone's items looking for her own. We all just kind of sat there stunned until she walked out to look in another class room for the thief. During my time there, people complained about all sorts of things going missing and never being returned - both expensive and cheap items. Items of mine from my kit were stolen. I had paid for a locker for the 18 months I was there but I couldn't protect my items 100% of the time.
You need to be vigilant to either stop people stealing from you or to limit the amount people steal from you. I suggest that you have your name or initials scratched into your knives on the handles and that you write your name onto anything that can take permanent marker. When you leave and have a decent job, you can buy better equipment for yourself and stop putting your name on your stuff if you so wish. But, for now, mark your belongings and buy a padlock for your bag/case because it gets very expensive replacing equipment.
