I am looking for a good survival knife?
What are some good ones without a huge price tag?
i already have the ka-bar usmc fighting knife but i wonder about the marine raider bowie knife.
I don't know what you consider to be a huge price tag, but pay the money for a good knife.
There are a lot of different types of knifes that could be used for survival.
A Swiss Army Knife will get you a long way, and is pretty reasonable price wise.
A good mulitool is also a good choice- choose a Leatherman, Gerber, Sog, or Victorinox. My personal choice is a Sog, but any of those 4 are good.
There are hundreds of different good fixed blade knives for survival purposes out there for under $100
You might check out the cold steel bushman- $20 for a good solid knife that won't break easily.
Other than the bushman, I would expect to pay at least $50 for a decent fixed blade.
Many variations of Kabars, the sog field pup, Cold steel SRK, Ontario SP1 and SP4, CRKT ABC operator, Ultima, and M60, Gerber steadfast, Benchmade Rant, Fixed Griptillian, Snody, Hinderer, and fixed osborn, Boker Arbolito, Gaucho, Magnum, and armed forces tactical, and the Becker BK7 are all good fixed blade survival knives with blades between 4 and 8", and price tags between $40 and $70. I'm a big fan of the CRKT ABC operator and the Ontario SP4 personally.
Edit: Stormgal hit the nail on the head, can't believe I forgot, the Mora's rock, I love mine, $15, great sheath, high carbon steel, and razor sharp. The only problem is that the blade is a little thin, so it's not good for heavy work. I prefer a heavier blade that will stand up to chopping.
For a folding knife, you want a good solid lock, so that it doesn't fold on your fingers.
Cold steel also offers a folding bushman that looks to be pretty good, for $35
Otherwise, I would recommend either a Sog with an Arc lock, or a Benchmade with an Axis lock. Both are extremely strong, and easy to work. I carry a Benchmade 940 Osborn Axis, and it's a great knife, but it isn't exactly cheap. Sogs that you might consider would be the Trident and the visionary. Benchmade offers the Griptillian and the Ambush with the Axis lock for a reasonable price.
