Whats the best way to restore an old combat knife?
I found it recently going through my grandfathers old Irish army stuff. It's not in bad condition, but it could be a lot better. Anyone got any tips on how to restore it?
I would soak the whole thing in WD40 for a couple of 'days' first. WD40 is brilliant for deep cleaning working metal parts of most machinery and tools. A military antique knife is no different, and the action of WD40 will 'gently' dissolve any old dirt, grime and attack the surface rust. After a good soak, get a one inch paint brush and spend a few minutes brushing deep into the nooks and crannies. Dry all the WD40 off with bog roll or paper towell. If you have a Dremill or a hand held rotary tool, it usually comes with buffer and polishing pads. I would try a 'low' speed buffer and then polishing action on all the exposed surfaces. I think you need to apply a metal polishing solution onto your buffing pads such as brasso.
If you haven't got a Dremmill, you can always buy some Duraglit from your corner shop like this.

Use lots of elbow grease, it might take an hour and several goes.
To sharpen it, you need a proper sharpening stone like this.

But unless you're going to take it into combat, I would leave it blunt. Hope you get it cleaned up okay, look after your Granddad's knife...
