What is a good survival/field knife?
I am looking for a good fixed blade knife. I want one to carry around the field, which would only be used in a survival situation. Does anybody know of a knife that is less than $100 or $150, but is still a great survival knife. I would love to know if you have ever had to use a knife to get through a night in the woods, and what knife it was.
Most any name brand full tang knife will be pretty good. Kabar is a decent knife, so is Benchmade, Ontario, CRKT, ect. with a budget of $150 for a fixed blade, you could even get into some of the higher end knifes, like TOPS, Microtec, even Strider. For a survival knife, I suggest a heavy point that is unlikely to break, not something that tappers down to a fine point. Also, don't get the "survival knives" with the hollow handle to hold survival equipment. Hollowing out the handle means that the knife can't have a full tang, so the blade to handle connection is pretty weak. The exception to this a one piece knife, such as the Cold Steel Bushman or the Chris Reeve one piece knife line, which offers a hollow handle and a blade to handle connection that is as strong or stronger than a full tang. While the Chris Reeve knives start at $200, and so are a bit out of your price range, the Cold steel bushman is definitely one to consider- a really good heavy duty knife for $20. If you decide on a bushman, try looking for a used or old stock model with a leather sheath. A few years back, they changed the sheath to a lower quality nylon sheath, and you would be much better off with the old leather one.
As for using a knife for survival, I can think of a couple of occasions. The first that comes to mind was trying to start a fire in a bad downpour. All the wood was soaked by the heavy rain, and wouldn't light. I found a decent sized log, about 6" diameter that had been dead for a while, cut off about 6" with a saw to remove the soaked end of the log, and then cut off another 6" piece. Then I found a good solid branch about 2' long and 3" in diameter, and used it to hit the back of my bushman blade and drive it though the piece of wood, splitting it in half. I split each half into half the same way, and that gave me easy access to the wood in the middle of the log, that had been shielded from the rain by the outer wood, and was still dry. I chopped up the dry wood into small pieces and was able to build a fire.
If you really need a fixed blade in the woods, then what you need if for is likely going to require a heavy blade, which is why I recommend a heavy point that won't break.
